New Delhi:

India’s COVID-19 R number is falling to the value of 0.92 which be the lowest ever in comparison to previous week’s 0.95 R value.

The Reproduction number is a parameter by which coronavirus or any other’s disease rate or its ability to spread is calculated. Coronavirus or the Sars-CoV-2- has an R number of about three if no action is taken to stop its spreading, from the past four weeks R number in the country has been below 1. The number below 1 is considered to be declining stage of cases in the country.

A researcher at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai, Sitabhra Sinha says that the R number is continuously below 1 as the most affected states by coronavirus also have below 1 R values. However, states like West Bengal, Rajasthan and Kerala are among the few of some exceptional cases.

The Print, quotes the statement given by the researcher as, “Maharashtra, the state having the highest number of active cases, has R down to 0.84 from 0.94 the week before.” They further added, “The state with the second highest number, Karnataka, also managed to bring down R to less than 1 very recently — from around 1.06 to 0.89,” although the researcher doubted on the lasting of the scenario.

Kerala, saw decrease in the R value recently although it is not below 1 but definitely dropped from 1.29 in the last week to 1.08 this week. On the other hand West Bengal’s R rate rose from 1.05 in t5he past week to 1.07 this week which was highlighted by Mr. Sinha. He said to The Print, “initially the number of active cases was low — and so the R value of 1.06 didn’t ring any alarm bells. But even a small excess of R value over 1 would have major consequences if it continues to be higher than 1 for long enough.”

Metropolitan cities R rate although saw a slight increase remained below one except Chennai, Kolkata and Bangalore. Delhi’s rate rose from 0.82 to 0.94, Mumbai’s R value increased from the last week to 0.90. Other states such as Assam, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Tamil Nadu saw a rise in the R values but remained below 1 except Assam which recently raised its R value to 1.
