Manitombi Singh, former Mohun Bagan Captain & India defender passes away at 39

Lashiram Manitombi Singh also Captained popular football club Mohun Bagan and Air India and Salgaocar died after suffering from prolonged illness in the early hours of Sunday 9th August.

Former India Defender in football and captain of popular football club Mohun Bagan Lashiram Manitombi Singh passed away at the age of 39 years in his native village near Manipur’s capital city Imphal in the early hours of Sunday.

The news was shared on football club Mohun Bagan’s twitter handle; club shared a video tribute and a tweet which read “Mohun Bagan family is deeply saddened by the untimely demise of former club captain Manitombi Singh. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Manitombi Singh,”

Manotambi was ailing due to prolonged illness and drew his last breath on Sunday 9th July. His family included his wife and 8-year old son.  However none of the details came from the family members nor the character of illness was briefed.

Singh scored in his very first game against Mohun Bagan at the Calcutta Football League Premier Division in 2003 and went on to captaining the team leading them to victory in the 2004 Airlines Gold Cup.

Manitombi was a critical part of 2003 LG Cup winning Indian Under 23 side coached by Stephen Constantine vanquished the Vietnam side in Ho Chi Minh this also marked India’s first international victory since their victory at an eight-nation tournament in Singapore in 1971.

Singh also represented in the 2002 Busan Asian Games in the and also participated in the same year played in two friendly matches against Jamaica at Watford and Wolverhampton in the United Kingdom.

All India Football Federation (AIFF) condoled the passing away of Manitombi, AIFF president Praful Patel said in his condolence message. “It is sad to hear that Manitombi Singh is no more. I share the grief,” AIFF president Praful Patel said in his condolence message.

AIFF’s general secretary Kushal Das said “Manitombi was a talented footballer and full of energy. May his soul rest in peace.”

He played his last football game for Manipur State League defending champions Anouba Imagi Mangal in the 2015-16 season before becoming their head coach.

MP Kiren Rijiju and footballer Renedy Singh mourned Lashiram Manitombi’s death.
