Maharashtra Districts Hit By Severe Rainfall, Death Toll Reaches 27

Western Maharasthra has been flooded with rainfall from Wednesday, posing damage to life and property. Districts of Solapur, Pune and Sangli are reportedly waterlogged which has resulted a heavy flood in these areas. The IMD stated the reason of floods in the western part of the state to be the low pressure system in the Bay of Bengal which grew into a deep depression as it made its way to the Arabian Sea crossing the land.

Over 20, 640 people have been evacuated by the rescue operation teams from the districts of Solapur, Sanglia and Pune. The pune division officials said that nearly 17,000 people had to be evacuated from Solapur, being it the most affected region due to the flood and 3,000 and 640 people from the districts of Pune and Sangli.

The Pune Division officials stated that as per reports, the districts of Solapur, Pune and Sangli reported the occurencxe of 27 deaths from Wednesday night till Thursday afternoon. Among these 14 people died in Solapur four in Pune and nine in Sangli districts. In the town of Pandharpur of solapur district six people were killed due to collapsing of a wall which was reported in afternoon on Wednesday itself, from the area of Kumbharghat which lies on banks of River Bhima in Pandhapur. However, the District administration has ordered an investigation into the matter

In the Daund Taluka of Pune District, Inspector Sunil Mahadik states, “Four persons were swept away while crossing the stream around 10 pm on Wednesday. Bodies of three persons have been recovered. Search for the fourth person is on,” said Inspector Sunil Mahadik of Daund police station

The people trying to cross the stream and later died were identified as, Shahaji Lokhande(52), Appasaheb Dhaytonde (55) and his wife Kalavati (48). Moreover, search for one more local is being carried out by the police teams.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has looked into the matter and has ordered the officials to make sure no any life damage is caused and also stated that NDRF teams have been deployed in the affected areas and other forces have been asked to carry on with the emergency relief process. In addition to the above, assurance for the crops damaged in the flood and compensation for the relatives of those who died in the flood will be done by the administration.
