Indian astronaut-elects likely to be trained in Bangalore, Pune, Mumbai after completing generic training in Russia

The four Indian astronaut-elects are to be potentially in IAM Bengaluru, ASI Pune and INM Mumbai, says a source in the know of astronaut training. "The training in Russia is generic and they (astronaut-elects) will be provided Gaganyaan-specific training upon their return” says ISRO’s chairman, K Sivan.

Bengaluru, India:

The four Indian astronaut- elects presently training in Moscow, Russia are likely scheduled to endure similar training upon their return to the country, in the early months of the following year.

India’s first manned space mission of 2022 team is planning to train every thread of the astronaut-elects in psychological, physical, manual operation and microgravity training. It also includes the rigorous routines for “survival training” in varied conditions.

“The training in Russia is generic and they (astronaut-elects) will be provided Gaganyaan-specific training upon their return. They will have to undergo medical training, psychological training, advanced training, and flight simulation training,” Sivan said.

Institute of Aerospace Medicine (IAM) in Bengaluru will serve the Gaganyaan oriented astronaut training. While the Army Sports Institute (ASI) in Pune and Institute of Naval Medicine (INM) will look after physical fitness and training routines and microgravity training using underwater stimulators respectively.

Indian Space Agency, ISRO is collaborating with industries to work and design latest stimulators that complement the settings of India’s first manned mission of 2022.

“The crew and service simulators will allow astronauts to train on using onboard survival kits, operation of various systems such as orbital monitoring”, said Sivan.

“Apart from all this, astronauts will have a regular schedule of aircraft flying to keep them active”

“So, the focus will be on physical and medical fitness, survival, advanced theory training and simulations. All the systems will be simulated so that they have confidence. They must be trained on various functions such as oxygen level monitoring and so on,” he added.
