Ahmedabad, Gujarat:

In view of a sudden spike in the coronavirus cases in the eminent city of Gujarat, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation notified the enforcement of a night curfew. People started purchasing more than required out of fear and panic.

Crowds of people came out in Kalupur Market on Friday morning, right after the declaration of night curfew by the local body on Thursday.  It will be imposed from 9 pm on Friday (November 20) to 6 am on Monday (November 23) to limit the unanticipated rise in coronavirus cases, said the government officials.

It is ensured that shops selling milk and medicines will be allowed to open during this two-day period curfew.  In the meantime, Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani clarified the rumours of a fresh lockdown on Friday morning by assuring people that there is no chance of a new lockdown in the state.

Mr. Rupani stated, “The weekend curfew announced is limited to Ahmedabad city as a precautionary measure. There are no talks about a fresh lockdown.”

The curfew is imposed to curb the spike of fresh COVID-19 cases.

“Police personnel have been ordered to strictly implement rules pertaining to wearing masks and maintaining social distance,” he added. The government officials and coronavirus warriors are trying to make sure that people follow proper social distancing and precautionary measures.

Dr Rajiv Kumar Gupta, IAS Officer of Gujarat, had tweeted earlier, “The coronavirus situation was reviewed late at night and it was decided that the full curfew will be imposed in Ahmedabad from 9 am Friday to 6 pm Monday. During this period, only shops selling milk and medicines will be allowed to remain open.”

To reduce the risk of spread, the earlier decision to reopen schools in Ahmedabad from November 23 has been taken back.

As per the data released by the Gujarat government’s health department, the total confirmed COVID-19 cases stand at more than 45,000. This includes more than 40,000 recoveries and nearly 2,000 fatalities.

The active cases in Gujarat stand at 12,677, as last updated on Thursday by the state government’s COVID-19 dashboard. This also includes those 87 patients who are on ventilator support. The state on Thursday informed 1,340 new cases along with 1,113 recoveries and seven more COVID related casualties.
