Barcelona vanquishes Real Madrid by 4-0 in 1st Women’s Clasico

The Real Madrid women’s team lost its inaugural match on Sunday was beaten 4-0 by defending Spanish league champion Barcelona.

Barcelona striked against Real Madrid 4-0 in the first ever women’s Clasico on Sunday 4th October.

Barca got an expected victory in a historic fixture with the help of goals from Patri Guijarro, Lieke Martens and Alexia Putellas, adding own-goal by Madrid goalkeeper Maria Rodriguez herself.

Madrid women’s team played their first ever official fixture and also the first ever match against Barca, Real’s most prestigious rival and also the reigning Primera Division champions. Patri put her name to the fixture’s first goal when her shot deflected 19 minutes before Rodriguez passed into her own net after some excellent work by Caroline Graham Hansen. Martens and Alexia made the result more powerful in the last 25 minutes.

Madrid president Florentino Perez decided at odds with attending the club’s inaugural women’s match and choose instead to travel and attend Madrid’s men’s team play against Levante in La Liga later on Sunday.

Barcelona’s women’s team was founded in 1988 and lifted their first Spanish title in 2012 also have claimed the trophy another four times including last season, when they reached the Champions League final.

Madrid, on the other hand are on their debut campaign with their women’s team, already a established female club CD Tacon into existence last summer.

Madrid will have to put more efforts to be as good as Barca, who demonstrated their superiority and could have possibly scored more were it not some good saves from Madrid goalkeeper Rodriguez.

The match wasn’t attended by any fans just like men’s football due to restrictions put in place by Spanish authorities as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Women’s football in Spain has seen promising growth in recent years with more fans going to games and matches being broadcasted on television.
